Entering the life of a Lawyer

So, I am an aspiring lawyer. A lot of things come to my mind when think about the word “Law”, such as a system of rules, regulations, code of conduct, behavior of humans. But do we even know what does it actually stand for or why is it even there? Our minds have been brought up in such a way that when we think of “law” we just think what all actions are prohibited and what are not in layman language. I wanted to learn and read about the history, philosophy, scope, characteristics and types of law since I was in school, the subject just really connected to me which is why I decided to give entrance exams for Law Schools. When I finally got into one, the race was on. 300 students with me, competing with each other. A rat race had just begun. As any 1st year student I was excited to have my first visit at a Court, so I urged my mentor while I was interning to take me to a Court with him. I visited Patiala House District Court at India Gate. Now trust me when I say this, the system, the working style and the ambience of courts is extremely different from what we have seen in movies while growing up. The Court was huge, had a lot of court rooms, full of people, extremely dirty and it was not the place I would like to visit if I made a career out of it, there were around thirty-forty lawyers present inside one court room, waiting for their case to be called out. I was confused, dazed, did not imagine the first Court visit to be like this, then everyone in the hall stood up when the Judge arrived, another Court room mannerism, slowly I began understanding what exactly was happening and read the file about the case we were there for. Saw the Lawyers arguing and conversing with the Judge in ‘Hindi’ which came as a shock because I was under the impression that ‘English’ was the official language. I saw a lot of cases taking place in front of me, which made me think about the practical application of law which is worlds apart from the theoretical language that we study through our five years of law school. More and more people were coming in the Court, which made me think about the 1.3 Billion present in this country with 3.3 crore cases pending, with 19 judges per 10 lakh people, was I ready to enter this legal world?

It is a very comforting feeling that our generation is turning a new page in terms of societal norms. Awareness may not win all battles but it will in most cases keep us ready when the moment of question arises. Brick by brick, we must always think of leaving our home better than we came into it. And we can only do that by sharing our knowledge and posing solutions. Can’t wait to see the changes you are going to bring in this world brother.
